ROCK HILL, SC— Timely hitting and strong pitching led Winthrop softball to a series win over USC Upstate, Monday afternoon at Terry Field.
The day began with finishing game two that resumed in the top of the sixth inning after rain forced the postponement Saturday evening. The Eagles won the game 8-7 on the walk-off error and took the third game 3-1 behind a combined two-hitter.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- This game started on Saturday as part of the second game of a doubleheader but was halted in the top of the sixth inning with the Eagles leading 7-6
- The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning
- With one out, Helton singled down the left field line and then moved to second when Oakes reached on an error
- Case stepped in and took a 1-0 pitch just over the fence in left field for a 3-0 lead
- Three batters later Wright singled to score Obier for a 4-0 lead
- The lead was 5-0 after an inning and a half as the Eagles got one back in the bottom of the second
- Madyson Watson led off the inning with a single and then Ansley Gilreath and Taylor Charlton drew walks to load the bases for the second straight inning
- Watson scored on an RBI groundout by Blake Wallert to make it 5-1
- Both teams scored in the 4th to make it a 6-2 game
- In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Eagles pushed five across to take a 7-6 lead
- With started with a one-out single to center by Watson and then Gilreath doubled to left center
- After Charlton recorded the second out with a foul out to first, Wallert singled to center to score Watson
- Morgan Lowers reached on an error to keep the inning alive as Gilreath scored to make it a two-run game
- Ashley Westbrooks doubled to left center, scoring Wallert and Lowers to tie the game
- On the play, Westbrooks took off to third on the throw home and came around to score as a throw to third to get the out ended up in foul territory in left field as the Eagles grabbed the lead
- Upstate tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the seventh on an Obier single that just squeezed through the hole at short that scored Helton after she led off the inning with a single
- Ansley Gilreath led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right
- Taylor Charlton followed with a single up the middle as Gilreath moved to third, but the centerfield closing in on the ball misplayed it and Gilreath raced home for the winning run
- Watson won her 12th game of the season (12-4) as she battled in a complete game effort allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits and had six strikeouts
Game 2
- The Eagles received combined effort in the circle to hold the Spartans to two hits in the second game to help clinch the series
- Madyson Watson started the game tossing 3.1 innings allowing one run on two hits and Kiley Majette tossed 3.2 innings allowing no hits or runs, issuing no walks and striking out four to earn the win
- Upstate struck in the top of the fourth inning as it loaded the bases with one out
- Watson walked Dorgan to score a run and Majette entered the game to try and keep the damage minimal
- Majette got the two outs to keep it a one-run game
- Winthrop answered immediately as it took advantage of Lowers reaching on an error to lead off the frame
- Keleigh Romine sacrificed Lowers to second and then Westbrooks singled to center to score Lowers
- Eagles broke the tie in the sixth as Romine hit a leadoff double to left
- Romine was replaced by pinch-runner Makenzye Whitman and then Westbrooks reached on an error to put runners at first and second with no outs
- Two batters later Majette ripped a shot to left as her double scored two runs for a 3-1 lead
- Majette then retired the side in order in the seventh to earn the win, giving the Eagles the series
EXTRA BASES
- Westbrooks extended her streak of consecutive games reached to 21, which is just the 6th player to reach 20 or more in a single-season since records started being kept in 2006
- The streak is the longest since Megan Chapman reached in 22 straight in 2009
- Westbrooks also surpassed the 90-RBI mark in her career and now has 93 as she's the 15th player in program history to reach the milestone
- Eagles are only 1-of-2 conference teams to take a series from USC Upstate and ended its conference winning streak at 13 games
- Eagles handed Christina Biggerstaff just her fourth loss of the season (24-4)
- Winthrop has put itself in position to have its first winning record in Big South play since the 2015 team was 14-9 and just the second time in the last 10 seasons
