SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (12-6, 8-0 Big South) downed USC Upstate (1-15, 0-5) in a 7-0 sweep on the road Tuesday afternoon to improve to an undefeated 8-0 in the Big South Conference with one league match remaining. With the win, the Eagles clinch at least a share of the regular season Big South championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-No. 46 Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor sparked the sweep with a 6-0 shutout win at the first doubles position. Tayla Van Eck and Ellie Burns put the doubles point on the board for the Eagles with a 7-6 tiebreaker win at court three, leaving court two in an undecided deadlock at 6-6.
 
-Alisa Soloveva steamrolled Noelia Acuna 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 to lead off the Eagles in singles play.
 
-Rafaela Santos posted her 11^th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 dismantling of Upstate's Vale Zarama.
 
-Burns would post the winning fourth point with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Gabriela Cevallos, her fourth 6-0 set of the season.
 
-No. 43 Proctor posted a commanding 6-3, 6-0 straight-set win at court one to push the lead to 5-0.
 
-Though each were pushed to a set tiebreaker in one set, Kauffman and Van Eck came out on top and completed their straight-set wins to finish off the sweep.
 
NOTABLES
-Soloveva (15) and Proctor (11) each own double-digit winning streaks and the best overall records (16-1) in the Big South Conference.
 
-At 8-0 in Big South play, Proctor has beaten each of her league opponents in straight-sets while allowing no league opponent more than three games in one set.
 
-Winthrop has won 16-consecutive Big South regular-season matches. The Eagles' last conference loss was the final match of the 2017 season, a 4-3 loss to Charleston Southern, giving Winthrop a 7-1 conference record that year.
 
UP NEXT
Winthrop hosts its final home match of the season on Saturday, taking on Georgia State at 11 a.m. in nonconference play. Seniors Ellie Burns, Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor will be recognized by their teammates and coaches prior to the match.
