Yankle's Ninth Inning Homer Lifts Eagles Over Paladins

GREENVILLE, SC - Winthrop baseball snapped a four game losing streak Tuesday night in Greenville, beating Furman 8-6 to split the season series. Spencer Yankle hit a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the ninth inning which proved to be the game winner, giving the Eagles their fifteenth win of the year (now 15-13 overall and 6-3 in Big South play) and pushing Furman back to 10-17 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Eagles got on the board in the top of the second inning when Jake Sullivan doubled to left field, scoring Grant English to tie the game at 1.

- In the top of the fourth inning, English continued the Eagle offense by homering to left field for his first of the season, re-tying the game at 2.

- After Furman scored the game's next three runs to take a 5-2 lead after four innings of play, the Eagles responded with three of their own in the top of the fifth inning. Hunter Lipscomb made it a 5-3 with a double to score Scout McFalls and advance Spencer Yankle to third. Yankle came in to score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Matthew Mulkey, cutting the Furman lead to 5-4. The Eagles then tied the game on another RBI hit by Grant English, a single through the right side to score Hunter Lipscomb

- After the Paladins took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with one run in the frame, Winthrop had an answer again when Scout McFalls singled the other way into left field, scoring Jake Sullivan to tie the game at 6.

- The biggest runs of the game came in the top of the ninth inning, when the Eagles scored twice to take the lead for good. Spencer Yankle led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field, his third of the season, to bring home the game-winning run and give the Eagles a 7-6 lead. Winthrop added an insurance run in the inning when Grant English added to his big day at the plate, singling through the left side to score Hunter Lipscomb

NOTABLES

- Grant English had another offensive outburst on Tuesday for the Eagles, going 4-5 with a home run, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
