Eagles Fall To Western Carolina Wednesday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop dropped a midweek contest 9-4 against Western Carolina, Wednesday evening at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts struck first with five runs in the second inning
  • With runners at first and second and one out, Kailey McNeil grounded deep in the hole at short and Blake Wallert's throw to first was off the mark and not in time
  • On the throw over to first Madison Armstrong, who was at second, came around and headed home but Ansley Gilreath couldn't get the ball out of her glove cleanly to make a throw home as the run score for a 1-0 lead
  • After Lindsay Perillo was hit to load the bases, Long took a 1-0 pitch just over the fence in left field for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead
  • Taylor Charlton led off the third inning with a double to left to get the offense going
  • The next batter was hit by a pitch as Wallert took first
  • Morgan Lowers then loaded the bases with a single through the left side
  • Ashley Westbrooks put the Eagles on the board with a sacrifice fly to left as Charlton raced home and Wallert hustled to third
  • Keleigh Romine hit a shot to the left side that was kept in the infield on a diving stop by the shortstop but Wallert scored on the play as the Eagles trailed 5-2
  • Madyson Watson drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and was replaced by pinch-runner Reema Patel
  • Gilreath followed with a single and then Charlton moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt
  • Wallert came through with a double down the left field line that scored two and made it a one run game
  • Catamounts added another run the fifth and three more in the sixth
  • Watson took the loss falling to 11-4 on the year as she allowed a season-high eight runs on eight hits in five innings with no walks and seven strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
  • Lowers single in the third inning was the 199th of her career as she also made her 201st career start (205 games)
  • Lowers has now hit safely in six straight games while Westbrooks has reached base in 18 straight games
  • Eagles were 4-for-7 (.571) leading off in the game, but stranded a total of nine in the game
  • Charlton joined Lowers and Tori Walker with having two doubles in the same game this season
  • Sabrina Shroades single in the 7th inning was her second pinch-hit of the year (2-for-5)
