HAMPTON, VA— The Winthrop softball team has won five straight after a doubleheader sweep at Hampton with wins of 8-4 and 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Big South Conference action.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Hampton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Brianna Anderson hit her second homerun of the season, a two-run shot to left
- Eagles got one back in the second as Brooke Ellison led off the inning drawing a walk
- Tori Walker then reached on an error as Ellison moved to third on the play and then Ellison scored on a double steal
- A couple of mistakes proved costly for the Eagles in the fourth inning as a leadoff error and a passed ball set up Hampton with runners in scoring position
- Pirates grabbed a 3-2 lead on a double down the right field line and then took a 4-2 lead on a wild pitch
- Blake Wallert and Morgan Lowers started the 5th inning to get the offense going
- Ashley Westbrooks reached on an error as Lowers moved to third and Wallert scored
- After Westbrooks stole second, Keleigh Romine tied the game at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly
- Westbrooks scored on a passed ball for a 5-4 lead and then Madyson Watson doubled to left to score Walker for a 6-4 lead
- Westbrooks put the Eagles ahead 7-4 in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly
- Watson helped her cause again in the seventh as she hit a one-out homerun to center, her second straight game with a homerun
- Watson improved to 11-3 on the year and 7-0 in Big South play as she allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts
Game 2
- Eagles struck first in the third inning as Kiley Majette led off the inning with a single and then one-out singles by Lowers and Westbrooks loaded the bases
- Romine drove a ball deep enough to left field to score Majette from third for her second sac fly of the doubleheader
- Ellison was hit to load the bases again but Watson popped up to end the threat
- Blake Wallert made Hampton pay for a fielding error that kept the inning alive as she hit a two-run blast to left center for a 3-0 lead
- Majette tossed her 6th career shutout as she allowed four hits with one walk and five strikeouts to improve to 6-11 on the year
EXTRA BASES
- Lowers had three hits on the day as she moves into 8th all-time in career hits at Winthrop and is now two away from 200
- Lowers had two hits in the second game of the doubleheader and now has 17 multi-hit games
- This was the Eagles third shutout of the week as Watson tossed two in the PC series and Majette with hers in the second game of the doubleheader
- Wallert reached 15 RBI on the year as the Eagles now have eight batters with 15 or more RBI on the year
- Wallert now has 13 RBI in 14 Big South Conference games she's played in
- Westbrooks reached base in both games and has now done so in 16 straight games
- All three of Watson's homeruns this season have come in game she's started in the circle
- This is the first five-game winning streak since the Eagles won all five games at the Cougar Classic in 2017
