Webb, Westbrooks Help Eagles Earn Doubleheader Split At Campbell

BUIES CREEK, NC— Winthrop softball took the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split as it opened up Big South Conference action Saturday afternoon at Campbell.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Camels struck first in the bottom of the fifth as Kynadi Tipler set the table with a leadoff single
  • Tipler was replaced at first by pinch-runner Hannah McCravy, who stole second with one out
  • Following a walk to Danielle Northrup Campbell turned to pinch-hitter Hannah Jones, who doubled up the middle for just her third hit of the year
  • The double by Jones gave the Camels a 1-0 lead and then a fielder's choice led to the second run
  • Eagles cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth as Morgan Lowers led off with a single
  • Lowers moved to second on a ground out to first by Brooke Ellison and over to third on a fly out to right by Keleigh Romine
  • Taylor Charlton stepped in with two outs and doubled down the right field line to score Lowers from third
  • In the top of the seventh the Eagles gave themselves a chance to tie the game getting two runners on with one out
  • Tori Walker popped up to second for the second out and then Lowers lined a shot but right at the second baseman to end the game
  • Kiley Majette took the loss despite allowing just two runs on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts
  • The Eagles finished the game with seven runners left on base
  • Lowers finished with two of the team's three hits for her 9th multi-hit game of the year
  • Campbell's Megan Richards held the Eagles to three hits, one run while issuing no walks and striking out one to earn the win
Game 2
  • Campbell struck in the bottom of the first as Bri Bryant led off the inning with a single followed by a single from Megan Mozingo
  • After Abby Perryman popped up to third, Kayla Fredendall doubled to left center to score Bryant for the 1-0 lead
  • Eagles came back with three in the second for a two-run advantage
  • Romine drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch
  • Charlton grounded out for the first out before Ashley Westbrooks singled to center to put runners at the corners
  • Ansley Gilreath grounded out to short, but Romine crossed the plate to tie the game
  • Madyson Watson hit a ball to right that scored two courtesy of an error by the right fielder as the Eagles led 3-1
  • In the top of the fourth, Westbrooks picked up her second hit with a single to left and then Webb stepped in and took the first pitch over the fence in center for her first collegiate homerun as the Eagles led 5-1
  • A one-out double by Bryant got things started for Campbell in the fourth as Mozingo followed with a single to score Bryant to make it 5-2
  • Perryman doubled to right, scoring Mozingo to make it a two-run game
  • Watson got a fly out and pop out to end the threat and keep the Eagles ahead by two runs
  • The Winthrop offense kept it going in the fifth with four runs to build a 9-3 lead
  • Walker led off the inning getting hit on a 3-1 pitch, but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Lowers
  • After Brooke Ellison flied to right for the second out, the Eagles added to their lead
  • Romine started it with an RBI double to left center, scoring Lowers from first base
  • Kamryn Culp pinch-ran for Romine and scored on a Charlton single to left for a 7-3 lead
  • The Camels made a pitching change to Marissa Green, but the Eagles weren't done as Westbrooks doubled to left center, scoring Charlton
  • Westbrooks moved to third on a wild pitch, Webb walked and then Westbrooks scored on a wild pitch while Webb moved to second
  • Campbell made another pitching change as Lexy Head came in to get Watson to fly out to end the inning
  • Three straight singles to start the bottom of the sixth loaded the bases for the Camels
  • Hall came through with a single to the catcher but Perryman was thrown out at third on a force out as Fredendall scored
  • Wancheck doubled down the right field line, but Romine got the ball into Ellison and her throw home nailed Hall at the plate to keep it a three run lead
  • Majette came in and struck out Wheatley to end the inning and the threat
  • Majette ended up retiring the final four batters of the game to secure the win and earn the save (the second of her career)
  • Westbrooks finished with three hits and three runs in the game while Charlton had two hits with a run and RBI
  • Watson earned the win as she tossed four innings allowing three runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts to improve to 4-2 on the year
  • Campbell's Haley Hutchins took the loss as she allowed eight runs (six earned) on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts
 
EXTRA BASES
  • Majette surpassed 400 career strikeouts in the start in game one of the doubleheader as she now has 407 as she becomes the 7th player in program history with 400 strikeouts
  • Majette is now just six strikeouts from 6th all-time and 8th behind 5th place
  • Eagles scored nine runs in the second game, which was the 5th game of the year with nine or more runs and the 8th with six or more runs
  • It was the most runs scored against Campbell since a 13-5 win in the 2017 Big South Tournament as the Eagles had totaled just six runs in the previous four meetings that includes the first game of the doubleheader
  • Eagles posted their highest run total in a conference regular season game since Mar. 18, 2017 when the equaled the mark in a 9-1 win over Presbyterian College
  • Majette is now 2-4 all-time against Campbell and has seven total runs of support in her four losses
