COLUMBIA, SC— Winthrop softball fell 3-0 at 11
th-ranked South Carolina Wednesday afternoon in a game that was decided in the late innings.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Eagles threatened in the first as Tori Walker was hit on the first pitch of the game
- Walker moved to second on a passed ball and then stole third with two outs but Keleigh Romine battled but struck out to end the threat
- Walker reached again in the 3rd as she drew a two-out walk but Morgan Lowers grounded out to second for the third out
- Ashley Westbrooks started the fifth drawing a walk and then Ansley Gilreath single through the right side to put runners at the corners
- Logan Webb stepped in and hit the ball off the pitcher that was gathered by the second baseman who threw to the bag at second to the shortstop who got the force out and turned a double play with a throw to first to get Webb
- In the bottom of the fifth South Carolina scored the first run of the game as Karly Heath helped her own cause with a leadoff home run to right
- The Gamecocks added two more runs in the sixth for a 3-0 lead
- Romine drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and was replaced by pinch-runner Kamryn Culp
- After Taylor Charlton fouled out, Westbrooks stepped in and singled up the middle
- Kiley Majette hit a grounder to short that led to a force out at second as she reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners
- Gilreath stood in and hit a ball off the pitcher that was scooped up by the shortstop who threw to second for the force out to end the game
- Majette tossed six innings allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- Five of nine losses on the season have been by three runs or less
- Majette recorded four strikeouts in the game and now has 399 in her career
- Walker drew her 7th walk of the season which is second best on the team and has now reached base in five straight games

The Eagles are back in action this weekend when they head to Buies Creek, NC to open up Big South play at Campbell. The series will open up with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 1 p.m. and will wrap-up Sunday with a game at 1:30 p.m.
