RADFORD, VA - The homestanding Radford Highlanders used an eight-run fifth inning Sunday to complete the three game sweep of Winthrop, winning the weekend series finale 13-3. Winthrop has now lost four straight and is 14-13 on the season with a 6-3 mark in Big South play, with Radford improving to 13-13 and 7-2 in league play with the three game sweep of the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Eagles starting pitcher
Thad Harris had allowed only one run on four hits in his first four innings of work, but the fifth inning is what broke game open. After allowing a single and walking three in the fifth inning, Harris was lifted with two outs for
Jason Crumley. Crumley faced two batters, walking one and hitting one with a pitch before
Tyler Jones was brought in behind the left hander. Jones was able to get the Eagles out of the inning with a lineout, but the damage was done and Radford held a 9-1 lead at its completion. Sunday's loss was handed to Harris the starter, dropping his record to 1-3 on the season. Harris ended up allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits, striking out five and walking four.
- Jones went on to record 2.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out one and walking one.
Colten Rendon got the final three outs for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on a two-run homer, one of thre hits the right hander allowed. Rendon recorded two strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
- Offensively, the Eagles managed only four hits on the afternoon.
Jake Sullivan had an RBI single in the top of the second inning that scored
Hunter Lipscomb from second base, who reached on an error. In the top of the ninth inning, Winthrop plated two more when
CJ Conrad reached on a fielding error, allowing
Matt Levenson and
Drake Smith to come in to score on the play.
UP NEXT: The Eagles will take the field next on Tuesday afternoon with a trip to Greenville, SC to take on Furman. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
