RADFORD, VA - Winthrop lost its second game in as many days and third straight overall on Saturday, as the Radford Highlanders took the second game of the three game set by a crooked 20-11 score. Eagle pitching was unable to support the offensive effort, as the 20 runs allowed were the second most given up by the Eagles this season. Winthrop dropped to 6-2 in Big South play and 14-12 overall with the loss, and Radford is now 13-13 on the season and 6-2 in conference play with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Eagles starter
Nate Pawelczyk didn't have his best stuff on Saturday and was roughed up by Radford from the beginning of his outing. The right hander went less than five innings for the first time this season, going only 2.1 innings and allowing nine runs (seven earned) on twelve hits, all season highs for Pawelczyk. The Senior was tagged with the loss on Saturday for the Eagles, falling to 5-2 on the season.
-
Braxton Foley (4.1 IP),
Bryan Petta (0.1 IP),
Dalton Whitaker (0.2 IP) and
Macklin Ohs (0.1 IP) went the rest of the way for the Eagles, but the Highlander bats never quieted down, scoring eleven more runs after
Nate Pawelczyk's departure.
- Offensively, the Eagles scored 11 runs on 13 hits Saturday afternoon and made the ballgame interesting in the top of the eighth inning by cutting what was a 14-6 Radford lead to a three run game at 14-11.
Jake Sullivan hit a grand slam to right field for his fourth home run of the season and later in the inning
Alex Raines hit an RBI single to right that scored pinch hitter
Dillon Morton from second base. However, in the bottom of the eighth the Highlanders scored six more times to put the game completely out of reach.
NOTABLES
-
Matthew Mulkey collected three hits at the plate Saturday, going 3-5 with 4 RBI and two runs scored. His statline was largely thanks to his second inning three run homer, an opposite shot to right field for his fifth of the season. Mulkey also hit a two-run double down the right field line in the third inning which plated
Spencer Yankle and
Hunter Lipscomb.
-
Hunter Lipscomb had a 3-4 day in game two of the series, singling three times and scoring three runs.
UP NEXT: The Eagles turn the page to the series finale on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
Thad Harris will take the ball for Winthrop.
