Westbrooks Homers Three Times, Drives In 10 To Lead Eagles In Doubleheader Sweep Of Binghamton

ROCK HILL, SC— Ashley Westbrooks had 10 RBI on the day to help lead Winthrop softball to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton. The Eagles won the first game 11-5 and took the nightcap 7-2.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Binghamton grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning as Marissa Braito led off the game with a triple down the right field line
  • Braito then scored on a single by Stephanie Ragusa
  • Bearcats added three more runs in the second inning as they loaded the bases with one out
  • Braito then drew a walk to score Sara Herskowitz for a 2-0 lead
  • The next two runs came on a fielder's choice off the bat of pinch-hitter Madison Germano and then a double steal
  • The Eagles broke open the game in the third and fourth innings with four runs in each
  • The bottom of the third the Eagles trailed 5-0 as Tori Walker was hit with one out to get things started
  • After Morgan Lowers singled to short, Westbrooks stood in and hit her second homerun of the season with a three-run shot to left center
  • Blake Wallert walked with two outs and eventually scored on a throwing error
  • The 4th inning was highlighted by another Westbrooks homerun as she hit a grand slam with one out for an 8-5 lead
  • Walker had an RBI single in the 5th and then Ansley Gilreath had an RBI single in the 6th followed by an RBI double from Logan Webb for an 11-5 lead
  • Kiley Majette earned the win in relief as she tossed 5.2 innings allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts
Game 2
  • Winthrop grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings
  • In the bottom of the first Lowers beat an out an infield grounder for a single and then scored from first on a Westbrooks double to right center
  • Taylor Charlton's RBI single with two outs in the second put the Eagles up 2-0
  • In the 4th the Bearcats tied the game as Alex Guay hit a two-run homerun to left center
  • In the 5th inning Sabrina Shroades came through with a pinch-hit RBI single and then Wallert hustled home from third after Gilreath flied out to right in foul territory
  • Eagles added more insurance in the 6th as the inning was highlighted by a two-run homerun from Westbrooks
  • Madyson Watson turned in a complet game performance as she allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts to improve to 6-3 on the year
EXTRA BASES
  • Westbrooks career-high seven RBI in the first game of the doubleheader were the most by a Winthrop player in a single-game since Maddie Antone had six vs. East Carolina on Feb. 10, 2017
  • Westbrooks now has hit safely in five straight games, which is currently the team's best streak
  • With her big weekend offensively, Westbrooks now has 85 RBI in her career
  • Lowers finished the day with five hits as she now has 182 in her career
  • Eagles combined for 18 runs, 21 hits and six extra base hits in the doubleheader
  • On Friday the Eagles were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position but in Saturday's doubleheader were 11-for-27 (.458)

Eagles continue with non-conference action on Wednesday, Mar. 27 when they head to Conway, SC to take on former Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina in a single-game at 3 p.m.
