ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball dropped the opening game of a three-game series 7-2 against Binghamton, Friday afternoon at Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Eagles had a couple of chances in the first two innings, putting runners in scoring position in each inning
- The Bearcats struck first in the top of the second as Alex Guay led off the inning with a homerun to left and then with one out, Sarah Benn hit a two-run homer to left center
- Eagles got two back in the third as Ashley Westbrooks connected on her first homerun of the season, a two-run shot to right center
- Binghamton added three more in the fifth after a couple of hits just out of reach from the Winthrop infielders
- A passed ball moved runners to second and third and Guay came through with a single to right center that scored both runners
- On the play Keleigh Romine made a nice snag to keep the ball out of the gap and nailed Guay at second trying for a double
- Bearcats added some insurance in the seventh with a solo homerun from the pitcher Rozlyn Price
- The first two batters reached for the Eagles as Logan Webb drew a leadoff walk and Blake Wallert singled to right
- Price settled down and got Ansley Gilreath and Kiley Majette to pop out before striking out Kiley Majette to end the game
- Madyson Watson took the loss for the Eagles as she falls to 5-3 after allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 3.1 innings
EXTRA BASES
- The homerun for Westbrooks was the first of the season for her and just the fourth extra base hit as she now has 13 career homeruns
- All three homeruns for Binghamton were the first of the season for each batter
- Winthrop finished with five runners left on base and the Bearcats had seven
