Women's Tennis Defeats Gardner-Webb 6-1 Wednesday

Eagles improve to 6-0 in Big South play

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (10-4, 6-0 Big South) defeated Gardner-Webb (4-6, 2-2) in a Big South Conference contest at Rock Hill Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon, taking a 6-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-The Eagles opened a quick 1-0 lead with the doubles point, taking wins at courts one and three, with court two going unfinished with Alisa Soloveva and Rafaela Santos leading 4-1. At court one, No. 46 Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Gardner-Webb's Miljana Ristic and Daniela Naupari got on the board, going on to win 6-1. Tayla Van Eck and Ellie Burns clinched the point with a 6-0 shutout win at court three over Adrienne Vesely and Milica Panic.
 
-There was no stopping No. 43 Lauren Proctor, as she would lead off singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Santos cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 position for a 3-0 Eagles lead.
 
-Van Eck posted her second-consecutive straight-set conference win by an identical score, 6-2, 6-1 over Manon Delsol, clinching the team win for the Eagles.
 
-Soloveva marked her birthday with a straight-set victory, extending her career-long winning streak with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 2.
 
-Kauffman posted the Eagles' sixth point with a straight-set win over Valentine Limauge at the No. 3 position.
 
-The Bulldogs got on the board with a close win at the No. 6 position as Alya Mourad entered the lineup after doubles play due to a Burns injury.

 NOTABLES
-Each of the Eagles' five singles victories came in straight sets.

-Soloveva extended her career-long winning streak to 11 singles victories, nine of which she has taken in straight sets.

UP NEXT
The Eagles play two-straight road matches on Fri., Mar. 22 against Hampton at 12 p.m., then facing No. 28 ODU on Sat., Mar. 23 at 1 p.m.
