ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped its final home game of the season Saturday, falling 76-67 to the Campbell Camels.
Saturday was Senior Day for the Eagles and seniors
Courtney Hagaman and
Kayla Atkins were honored before the game.
Winthrop falls to 10-17 overall and 6-10 in the Big South with the loss while Campbell improves to 17-10 overall and 9-7 in the conference.
Despite the loss, the Eagles have officially secured a home game in the first round of the conference tournament. Winthrop will host an opponent to be determined on Tuesday, March 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop played a strong defensive first quarter, holding the Camels to only two made field goals. After the game was tied with 2:18 to play in the quarter, the Eagles closed on a 6-0 run and led 14-8 after the opening 10 minutes.
The second half turned into a free-throw shooting contest between the two teams. The two sides went back and forth. Campbell got within one and Winthrop increased its lead to as much as seven in the period and the Eagles were able to hold a 34-30 lead at the break.
Campbell opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take its first lead since the first quarter. The Camels then slowly extended their lead and led by eight heading into the final quarter.
Winthrop managed only two field goals in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter as Campbell extended its lead to 16 points. The Eagles started to battle back and got within nine with just under two minutes to play but couldn't come up with a late defensive stop, falling 76-67.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Marissa Cantrell scored a season-high 16 points Saturday while
Jah'Che Whitfield added 15 points.
Kem Nwabudu scored nine points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Winthrop shot 36 percent from the field but only connected on one of 11 three-point attempts. Campbell shot 43 percent for the game and 24 percent from three-point range. Campbell dominated the Eagles on the boards, 45-37 and scored 20 second-chance points.

Winthrop will close the regular season with two road games, starting with a Wednesday matchup at Charleston Southern.
