Box Score NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team fell 67-57 on the road to Charleston Southern Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (10-18, 6-11) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but a 9-2 run by Charleston Southern (11-18, 8-9) gave the Buccaneers a 9-6 edge. The Eagles were able to cut battle back against the Buccaneers and the game was tied 14-14 after the opening 10 minutes.
Winthrop again had a strong start to the second quarter, opening the period on a 9-2 run to open a seven-point advantage. Charleston Southern responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 23-23 with 6:28 remaining in the half. The scoring slowed over the final six minutes of the period and the Eagles were able to squeak out a one-point lead the break thanks to two free throws from
Courtney Hagaman with 11 seconds to go.
The Buccaneers opened the third quarter with four quick points but an 11-2 run by the Eagles gave Winthrop a 40-34 lead with just under three minutes to play in the period. The teams traded buckets over the final three minutes and the Eagles held a 42-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Fouls plagued the Eagles in the fourth quarter as Winthrop was whistled for 12 while the Buccaneers were only whistled for five. Free throws got Charleston Southern on the comeback road as the Buccaneers had tied the game in less than four minutes. Charleston Southern went 13-for-18 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and limited the Eagles to only one field goal in the final three minutes en route to the come-from-behind victory.

Courtney Hagaman led the Eagles with 12 points while
Anika Riley was the only other Eagle in double figures with 10 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds.
Winthrop shot 34 percent from the field for the game but struggled from three-point range, hitting on only three of 20 attempts from long range. Winthrop outrebounded the Buccaneers 47-41 and outscored them 31-16 on bench points.
