ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (9-4, 5-0 Big South) downed Longwood (8-3, 0-1) in a Big South Conference contest at Rock Hill Tennis Center Sunday afternoon, taking a 6-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-The Eagles earned an early lead with the opening doubles point. Duo Tayla Van Eck/Ellie Burns took court three 6-1 and No. 33 Lauren Proctor/Megan Kauffman clinched the point with a 6-3 win on court one. Court two would go unfinished with Winthrop's Alisa Soloveva/Rafaela Santos leading 4-2.
 
-No. 53 Proctor kept her momentum going in singles play, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marija Venta for a 2-0 lead.
 
-Van Eck pushed the margin to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Soloveva clinched the win with her 10^th-straight singles win, a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yulia Almiron at No. 2.
 
-Burns earned her 10^th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Crystal Nzewi.
 
-Santos battled back and forth in her first set with Emma Nurgazieva. Trailing 4-5, Santos battled back to a 6-5 lead, then held on for a 7-5 set win. Nurgazieva would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Santos once again battled back, winning six-straight games for the 6-3 set and match win.
 
-At court three, Winthrop's Kauffman and Longwood's Jamie Breunig also had a closely fought first set finding themselves in a tiebreaker, with Breunig earning the set win. Breunig carried momentum into the second set, earning a 6-1 set win and the match.

 
NOTABLES
-Each of the Eagles' five singles victories came in straight sets.

-Soloveva extended her career-long winning streak to 10 singles victories, eight of which she has taken in straight sets.
 
-Burns, Proctor and Soloveva each have double-digit singles wins, doing so every year of their Winthrop careers.
 
-The Eagles improve to 5-0 in Big South play for the third-consecutive season.

The Eagles will play three matches this week, taking on Gardner-Webb in Big South action at Rock Hill Tennis Center on Wed., Mar. 20 at 2 p.m., then playing two-straight road matches on Fri., Mar. 22 against Hampton and facing ODU on Sat., Mar. 23.
