ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop men's tennis (7-6, 2-1 Big South) fell short in a 4-3 loss to Longwood (8-3, 1-0) Sunday afternoon at Rock Hill Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-Longwood jumped out to the lead with the doubles point with wins on courts two and one.
 
-In singles play, Aditya Gokhale led the way to get the Eagles on the board with a straight-set victory at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-2 over Julian Farthing.
 
-Gabriel Dias posted his third-consecutive singles win, knocking off Guillermo Cagigas 6-4, 6-2 for a 2-1 Eagles lead.
 
-Longwood evened the scoreboard at 2-2 with a win at No. 2. Connor Williamson and Guilherme Sergio pushed each other to a 5-5 tie in the first set, but Sergio would pull out the 7-5 win and carry momentum into the second set for a 6-1 win.
 
-Diego Quiroz took his opening set 6-3 over Amadeo Blasco, but Blasco answered with a 6-4 second set to force a deciding third. The tightly contested match did not disappoint in the third. Quiroz held serve for a 5-4 lead and Blasco staved off defeat with a hold on deuce point to tie the match again at 5-5. The two top players would trade holds again for a 6-6 tie and deciding tiebreaker. With several intense points and saves, Quiroz would come away with the 11-9 set tiebreaker and match win.
 
-With Quiroz giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead, Winthrop would need at least one of the two remaining courts in play for a team win, both trailing in deciding third sets. Both freshmen Alberto Tinagli and Lluis Miralles dropped their opening sets and bounced back in the second. At No. 4, Tinagli would fall 2-6 in the third, and moments later Miralles was topped 6-1, giving Longwood the 4-3 team victory.

NOTABLES
 
-Senior Diego Quiroz extended his career-long singles winning streak to nine-consecutive matches. Gabriel Dias' three-match streak is second-longest on the team.
 
-The Eagles' success so far this season has followed the doubles point, winning each of the seven matches in which they have won the doubles point, and losing the six matches in which their opponents take the opening point.

The Eagles play two matches next weekend, heading to Elon on Fri., Mar. 22 at 3 p.m. and hosting UNC Asheville in a Big South contest on Sun., Mar. 24 at 1 p.m.
