ELON, N.C. – Winthrop men's tennis (7-7, 2-1 Big South) fell on the road at Elon (14-4) Friday afternoon as the Phoenix earned a 4-1 win at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-Elon took the early momentum with a 6-0 win on court two in the opening doubles competition, but Diego Quiroz and Ryan Jaede battled to a 7-5 win over Dino Bonetta and Taylor Foote at No. 3 to even the score. Elon would get the doubles decision with a tight 6-4 win at No. 1 by Felipe Sarrasgue and Mario Paccini over Connor Williamson and Lluis Miralles.
 
-Paccini and Williamson continued to face off in singles play at the No. 2 position with Paccini coming out with the 6-4, 6-1 win.
 
-Quiroz would put the Eagles on the board with a straight-set win at No. 1 over Sarrasague, 6-2, 6-2, the senior's 10^th straight victory.
 
-Elon pulled ahead 3-1 with a win at the No. 4 position as Felipe Osses-Konig and Alberto Tinagli pushed to three sets. After falling 6-0 in the first, Tinagli bounced back for a 6-4 second set win, but Osses-Konig would come back for a 6-4 third set and match win.
 
-At the No. 3 spot, Kyle Frankel clinched the team win for Elon with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Gabriel Dias.
 
-In unfinished matches on courts five and six, Aditya Gokhale and Lluis Miralles both dropped close 7-5 first sets and were in progress in second sets.    

NOTABLES
 
-Senior Diego Quiroz extended his career-long singles winning streak to 10-consecutive matches. Quiroz is 11-3 overall on the season, the lone Eagle with double-digit singles wins.
 
-The Eagles' success so far this season has followed the doubles point, winning each of the seven matches in which they have won the doubles point, and losing the seven matches in which their opponents take the opening point. 
 
-The match at Elon was the Eagles' final nonconference contest. Winthrop's five remaining matches are all Big South Conference competition.

The Eagles return home to Rock Hill Tennis Center for Big South Conference play, hosting UNC Asheville on Sun. Mar. 24 at 1 p.m.
