ROCK HILL, S.C. - Trailing Sunday's ballgame 4-0 after six innings and 6-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, Sunday looked like it was Charleston Southern's day to claim a victory in the three game series. However Winthrop mounted a furious ninth inning comeback, scoring four runs to win 7-6 in walk-off fashion over the Buccaneers.
Hunter Lipscomb knocked the game-winning hit for the Eagles, a single through the right side that scored
Scout McFalls to give Winthrop the series sweep, their fourth straight win and tenth overall (10-9) while Charleston Southern dropped to 6-15 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Eagles Starter
Thad Harris had his best start of the season on Sunday afternoon, working into the seventh inning. Harris left the game with the Eagles behind 4-0 but was not charged an earned run due to two errors made behind him. Harris allowed only four CSU hits, striking out four and walking two over the course of his outing in which he earned a no decision.
- Winthrop cut the CSU lead to 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning when designated hitter
Spencer Yankle hit a two-run home run over the left field wall for his first of the season.
- Charleston Southern added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth off Winthrop reliever
Colten Rendon to take a 6-3 lead, setting up the Eagles' unlikely comeback. After
Matthew Mulkey walked and
Jake Sullivan doubled to right field to start the inning,
Dillon Morton reached on an error by CSU first baseman Ryan Stoudemire to bring Mulkey to the plate and make it a 6-4 game. Two batters later,
Scout McFalls reached on an infield single that loaded the bases with one out. The Eagles then ripped three straight singles off the bats of
Alex Raines,
Spencer Yankle, and
Hunter Lipscomb to complete the comeback and win the 7-6 Sunday thriller.
- Winthrop is now 3-0 in Big South play and sits atop the conference following the opening weekend of conference play.
NOTABLES
- Catcher
Alex Raines had the best offensive game of his Winthrop career, going 5-5 at the plate with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored. Raines was nearly half the Eagles' offense on Sunday, recording five of Winthrop's twelve hits.
-
Spencer Yankle was the only other Eagle with a multi-hit game on Sunday with his eighth inning home run and ninth inning single. Yankle finished the day with 2 RBI and a run scored as well.
UP NEXT: Winthrop will take on non-conference foe The Citadel for the second time this season on Wednesday, 3/20 at the Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
