ROCK HILL, SC - Winthrop has its longest winning streak of the season at five games and is now 11-9 on the season after defeating The Citadel 8-1 at the Winthrop Ballpark on Wednesday night to complete the season sweep. The Eagles used steady pitching from five different hurlers and got runs in bunches to down the Bulldogs, who have lost six straight and are now 7-14 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pitching paced the Eagles on Wednesday, as five pitchers combined to allow only four Bulldog hits on the night.
Bryan Petta got his first career start and gave the Eagles four innings of one-run ball, striking out two and walking one while allowing two hits. Petta was removed on a pitch count after four innings and thus was Wednesday's winning pitcher, earning his first career win.Â
- After Petta's departure, The Eagles went the rest of the way behind effective relief outings fromÂ
Tyler Jones (1.1 IP, 1H)
Jason Crumley (2.1 IP, 1H, 1K),
Colten Rendon (0.1 IP) and
Mason Groves (1.0 IP). All five pitchers pitched to contact effectively and used great control, as the staff combined for 3 strikeouts and only one walk on Wednesday.Â
- Offensively, the Eagles scored twice in the third inning and scored three times apiece in the sixth and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.Â
- In the bottom of the third,
Spencer Yankle came to the plate with runners on second and third following a sacrifice bunt. Yankle singled into left which scored
Tyler Baker from third, and the throw home got away from the Bulldog catcher which allowed
Scout McFalls to score on the play because of the error.Â
- In the bottom of the sixth,
Matt Levenson came up with runners on first and second and singled to center field which scored
Hunter Lipscomb to make it a 3-0 Eagle lead. The next batter
Tyler Baker lined a single into center field which brought around both
Matthew Mulkey and
Matt Levenson to extend the lead to 5-0.Â
- In the bottom of the eighth, Winthrop added three more. After
Matt Levenson doubled down the left field line for his third hit of the game,
Tyler Baker came through with another RBI knock that scored Levenson to make it 6-0 Eagles. Winthrop's final two runs came in courtesy of
Hunter Lipscomb, who drove in Baker and
Scout McFalls for the Eagles' seventh and eighth runs of the night.Â
