ROCK HILL, SC - After
Zach Peek led the Eagles with a stellar pitching performance on Friday night, Winthrop got much of the same on Saturday from Senior RHP
Nate Pawelczyk en route to a runaway 13-5 victory over Charleston Southern in the second game of the three game series. Saturday was Winthrop's third straight win and improved the Eagles to 9-9 on the season, and Charleston Southern dropped to eight games below .500 at 6-14 with the Saturday loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Nate Pawelczyk turned in his fifth straight start of allowing two or fewer earned runs on Saturday, tossing six shutout innings in which the Senior allowed only three hits. Pawelczyk avoided Bucaneer bats all afternoon, tallying seven strikeouts while walking three batters. Pawelczyk exited after six innings with the Eagles on top 10-0 and earned his fourth win of the season, improving to 4-1 on the season having earned a decision in all five starts.
- Winthrop scored runs in each of the first five innings, including four runs in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 10-0 lead. The Eagles chased CSU starter Jaret Bennett after three-plus innings, knocking the lefty around for nine runs and seven earned runs.
-
Tyler Baker had his best offensive game of the season for the Eagles, going 4-5 at the dish with four singles. Baker drove in two runs on Saturday afternoon and scored one of his own, a potential turning point for a shortstop that had been scuffling mightily at the plate.
-
Hunter Lipscomb recorded a 3-5 day on Saturday to give him six total hits for the series. Lipscomb also drove in two runs and scored three of his own on Saturday, emerging as the Eagles' hottest hitter of the last week or more. Lipscomb used the whole field on Saturday, knocking a double down the right field line and a pair of singles the opposite way to left field.
- Winthrop has completely dominated the series through two games, outscoring Charleston Southern 22-6 and outhitting the Bucaneers 28-12.
UP NEXT: The Eagles will go for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon, as the Eagles and Bucaneers do battle one more time at the Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
