STATESBORO, GA— Winthrop softball captured two wins Saturday on day two of the Bash in the Boro with a 6-1 win over Savannah State and a 10-7 victory at Georgia Southern.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Savannah State
- For the second straight day, Winthrop pushed five runs across in an inning against the Tigers
- Leading 1-0, the Eagles scored five in the 5th to open up the game
- Keleigh Romine started the game in the circle and gave herself a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning as she delivered an RBI single to right with one out
- The 5th inning began with a Morgan Lowers single to right center followed by a single to left by Ashley Westbrooks
- Romine drew a walk to load the bases and Ansley Gilreath came through with a single to right for a 2-0 lead
- Brooke Ellison made it 3-0 when she singled to the pitcher, scoring Westbrooks
- A.G. Gardner followed Ellison with a pinch-hit RBI single to second for a 4-0 lead
- Logan Webb came through with an RBI single for a 5-0 lead and Madyson Watson's sacrifice fly put the Eagles up 6-0
- The lone run for the Tigers came in the sixth inning as Cortni Jones reached on an error with one out
- Jones advanced to third on a single from Amaiya Green and then Jones scored on an error by Blake Wallert at short on the throw to first
- Romine earned the win after allowing no runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings
- Romine, Westbrooks, and Webb finished with two hits in the game while Lowers had three
vs. Georgia Southern
- Winthrop struck first as Tori Walker set the table with a leadoff walk
- Walker was sacrificed to second by Lowers and moved to third on a fly out to right by Westbrooks
- And for the second straight game Romine came through with an RBI single
- Georgia Southern put four on the board in the bottom half of the first thanks to a couple of seeing-eye singles
- Faith Shirley led off with a single off the leg of Kiley Majette and moved to second as Wallert tried to make the out at first and her throw got away
- Mekhia Freeman followed with an infield single as she just beat the throw from Wallert
- Shelby Wilson squeezed one in the hole at second to score Shirley and tie the game at 1-1
- Hannah Farrell doubled to right center for a 3-1 lead and Macy Coleman slipped one past a diving Ellison at second for a 4-1 lead
- Winthrop fought right back with a five-run second to grab a 6-4 lead
- Gilreath led off the inning with a double off the bottom of the fence in right followed by a single to left center by Wallert
- Ellison singled off the pitcher to score Gilreath to cut the deficit in half at 4-2
- Two batters later Walker grounded out to third as Wallert hustled home to make it a one run game
- Westbrooks tied the game at 4-4 with a single up the middle, scoring Taylor Charlton
- Romine gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead with an RBI ground-rule double to left
- After Majette walked to load the bases the Eagles officially batted around as Gilreath stepped in and also drew a walk to make it a 6-4 lead
- Georgia Southern tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the second as it loaded the bases with three straight walks
- Then Farrell hit a ball to center that Lowers tracked down and caught for the second out as Shirley scored from third and the Eagles took too long to get the ball into the infield as Freeman raced around to score from second on the play
- Winthrop grabbed an 8-6 lead in the 3rd as Charlton scored on a wild pitch and Walker scored on a chopper to first as the first baseman tried to throw home for the out
- Charlton put the Eagles on top 10-6 in the 4th as she came through with a one out, two RBI single to center
- Bella Roy made her collegiate debut when she entered the game in the 4th inning after Shroades issued a walk
- Roy was more than impressive as she struck out 11 of the 14 batters she faced in four innings of work
EXTRA BASES
- Romine's RBI single in the first against Georgia Southern gave her 3 RBI in four games on the year
- Lowers reached 150 career hits with her three-hit performance against Savannah State and is now 37 hits away from Winthrop's Top 10 all-time
- The five runs scored in the 2nd innings against Georgia Southern was the team's third five-run inning of the season so far (had 5 or more runs in an inning just twice in 2018)
- Lowers and Wallert extended their hitting streaks to four games with a hit in the second game of the day at Georgia Southern
- Roy became first Winthrop pitcher to reach 10 or more strikeouts in an appearance since Majette struck out 12 on Feb. 16, 2018 in a 4-3 win over Evansville
