Box Score GREENVILLE, NC – A late charge for the Winthrop lacrosse team fell short Friday as the Eagles dropped their season opener 13-12 on the road to the East Carolina Pirates.
HOW IT HAPPENED
East Carolina (1-0) raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 6:41 of the first half. Freshman
Mia Creighton got the Eagles on the board with 22:41 on the clock. After the Pirates went back up three, junior
Ellie Marindin scored her first of the season. East Carolina scored three of the next four goals to go up 7-3 with 15:04 left in the half.
Lauren Morris got the Eagle offense going with 12:21 on the clock to pull the Eagles within three. Winthrop then scored three goals in 44 seconds to tie the contest at 7-7. Marindin,
McKenna Blick and
Lauren Asher each tallied a goal to even the game with 7:59 remaining. Neither team scored over the remainder of the period and the two sides were tied 7-7 at the break.
Winthrop's (0-1) offensive momentum continued into the start of the second half as the Eagles scored the first two goals of the period. Asher and Morris tallied the goals for Winthrop to take a 9-7 lead. East Carolina responded with three straight goals to take a 10-9 lead with 14:03 left in the contest.
Olivia Deaver temporarily stopped the Pirate run with her first goal of the year to tie the game at 10-10. East Carolina scored the next two to go back up 12-10.
Mia Creighton's goal with 7:48 on the clock pulled Winthrop within one. Just over a minute later the Pirates went back up by two. Winthrop had a number of chances over the final five minutes but only found the back of the net with four seconds to go as Creighton brought the Eagles within one but didn't have enough time to do anything more.

Just like the score, the stats were very even between the two teams. East Carolina outshot the Eagles 29-28 and turned the ball over one fewer time 17-16. The Eagles won the ground ball battle 17-16 and grabbed 15 draws to East Carolina's 12.
