SEASON OPENERS
- Winthrop has won six of its last eight season openers
- Eagles opened the 2018 season with a 4-3 victory over Evansville at the Red & Black Showcase in Athens, GA
- All-time the Eagles are 29-16 all-time in season openers
BASH IN THE BORO
- Three days of action that includes the host Georgia Southern, Winthrop, St. Francis (Pa.), UT Martin and Savannah State
- This is the first trip to Statesboro, GA for the Eagles since they competed in the Eagle Classic in 2002
- The teams will compete on the newly renovated Eagle Field
GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is led by first-year head coach Windy Thees, who begins her 15th overall season as a head coach
- Winthrop returns all but one starter from the 2018 squad that includes the top nine batters and the entire pitching staff
- Leading the way are 2018 All-Conference selection's Ashley Westbrooks, Ansley Gilreath and Kiley Majette
- Westbrooks batted a team-high .340 and finished with 25 runs, 12 doubles, six home runs and 26 RBI
- Gilreath led the team with 10 home runs and 27 RBI
- Majette tossed 172.1 innings, finishing the season with 121 strikeouts to 33 walks
- Majette was 10-17 on the year and tossed two no-hitters
- Also returning is three-year starters Morgan Lowers and Blake Wallert
- In 2018 the Eagles opened up the season 4-1
HEAD COACH WINDY THEES
- Head coach Windy Thees is in her first year at Winthrop and in her 15th season as head coach of a collegiate softball program
- Spent five seasons at Georgia State & College compiling a 163-92 record followed by six years at Memphis (172-151) and three seasons at Ole Miss (69-94)
- In her 14 seasons she's compiled an overall record of 404-337 and a record of 241-245 at the helm of a D1 program
- Led Ole Miss to five wins over nationally-ranked opponents that included a 2-0 victory at #1 Florida in 2014
- In 2003 she led Georgia State & College to a runner-up finish in the Division II National Championship
- Thees was a four-year starter at Florida State as both a catcher and second baseman.
SCHEDULE
- Eagles have 10 opponents that finished in the Top 100 RPI in 2018 and seven in the Top 75
- There are three opponents that made an NCAA Regional, 11 teams that finished in the Top 3 of their respective conference and five of which played in a conference championship game
- Winthrop has two opponents in the preseason Top 10 with Georgia at 6th and South Carolina tied for 9th
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was picked to finish 7
th in the Big South Conference despite returning all but one starter and its entire pitching staff. Longwood was picked to finish first, edging out newcomer USC Upstate by eight votes as the favorite. Radford was picked third followed by Campbell, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Winthrop, Hampton and Presbyterian College.
UP NEXT
Winthrop will have the week off before heading to Athens, GA for its annual trip for the Red & Black Showcase Feb. 15-17. The Eagles will open up the showcase on Friday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. vs. Buffalo and will face the host Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m.
