Eagles Fall In Close Contest, 11-10, At Old Dominion Saturday

Box Score NORFOLK, VA – The Winthrop lacrosse team dropped a close contest Saturday afternoon, falling 11-10 on the road to the Old Dominion Monarchs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Old Dominion (1-4) controlled the majority of the first half, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the opening four minutes.  McKenna Blick got the Eagles on the board with 24:43 left on the clock.  After the Monarchs went back up by two, Lauren Morris scored on a free-position to bring the Eagles within 3-2.  While the Eagles didn't score the remainder of the half, they held Old Dominion to only two more goals as the Monarchs took a 5-2 lead into the break.

Winthrop (0-5) came out strong in the second half as Morris scored only 36 seconds into the period before Lauren Asher added two more goals to tie the game at 5-5 only 2:13 into the second half.

The two squads went back and forth after that as Old Dominion went back up 6-5 before Morris scored back-to-back free-position goals to put Winthrop back up 7-6.  The Monarchs scored the next three goals to go up 9-7 with 14:54 left in the contest.  Olivia Deaver and Blick picked up the next two tallies for the Eagles to tie the contest at 9-9 with 12:38 remaining.

The Monarchs quickly regained a one-goal edge and pushed their lead to 11-9 with six minutes remaining.  Asher pulled the Eagles within one with just over four minutes remaining but Winthrop couldn't find the tying goal, falling 11-10.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Lauren Morris led the Eagles with four goals while Lauren Asher added three and McKenna Blick netted two.  Olivia Deaver scored one goal and tallied Winthrop's only assist.  Alaina Girani finished the afternoon with nine saves.

Old Dominion outshot the Eagles 29-20 and won the draw-control battle 14-9.  Winthrop scooped 20 ground balls to the Monarch's 16.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop will have the next week off before returning to Eagle Field on Saturday, March 2 to host the Kennesaw State Owls at 1 p.m.
