Three-Point Shooting Lifts Radford Past Eagles Tuesday Evening

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team fell to Radford Tuesday evening as the Highlanders knocked down 12 three-pointers en route to the 79-57 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Radford (18-6, 12-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead with consecutive three-pointers only to see the Eagles battle back with six straight points to tie the game at 6-6.  An old-fashioned three-point play put Radford back in front but an Anika Riley jumper and a steal and fast break bucket by Sydney Buckley gave the Eagles a one-point edge.

After trading buckets, the Eagles tied the game at 14-14 with 31 seconds left but a last-second three-pointer by the Highlanders gave them a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.

Winthrop (10-15, 6-8) grabbed the first four points of the second quarter to take an 18-17 lead but Radford responded scoring seven straight to force Winthrop into a timeout.  The Highlanders extended their run to 10-0 before the Eagles put up five straight.  Despite the Eagle run, Radford pushed its lead to double-digits from the three-ball as three of their last four shots were from long range and took a 38-27 lead into the break.  Radford shot 60 percent from three-point range in the first half.

Both sides traded baskets early in the third quarter.  Radford pushed its lead to as much as 15 before a media timeout with 4:58 left in the period.  The Highlander lead increased to as much as 17 but the Eagles didn't go away.  Winthrop forced a few turnovers but the Eagles weren't able to string enough baskets together to truly cut into the Radford lead.  The Highlanders led 58-42 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Radford opened the fourth quarter with an 11-3 run, extending its lead to 24 points.  Winthrop was able to put points on the board but couldn't come up with the defensive stops to cut deeply into the deficit as Radford took the 79-57 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Jah'Che Whitfield was the only Eagle in double figures, totaling 12 points while Anika Riley pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.  Radford's Destinee Walker tallied a game-high 26 points, knocking down six three-pointers in the process.

Winthrop shot 38 percent for the game but managed only two three-pointers on 12 attempts.  The Highlanders barely edged the Eagles in rebounding 38-37.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop will have the next week off with Saturday being the team's bye weekend before heading to USC Upstate next Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip against the Spartans.
