Nwabudu Records Fourth Career Double-Double Tuesday in 58-49 Loss At USC Upstate

Box Score SPARTANBURG, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team dropped a tough contest Tuesday evening, falling 58-49 on the road to the USC Upstate Spartans.

Winthrop falls to 10-16 overall and 6-9 in the conference while the Spartans improved to 7-19 overall and 3-12 in the Big South.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides struggled to get their scoring going early in the first quarter.  With the score tied 4-4, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead with 3:43 on the clock.  While Winthrop didn't score any more in the opening 10 minutes, the Spartans managed only two more points and the Eagles led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter.

USC Upstate jumped out with a 6-0 run to open the second quarter to take a 12-10 edge.  After the Eagles tied the game at 12-12, the Spartans scored the next five points to go up 17-12.  Winthrop battled back to tie the game at 17 but Upstate was able to pull away for a 22-19 lead at the break.

The Spartans quickly extended their lead to double digits but Winthrop didn't go quietly.  The Eagles were able to battle back to within two points at 35-33 with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter.  USC Upstate closed the quarter on a 10-4 run and held a 45-37 lead heading into the final quarter. 

USC Upstate again pushed its lead to double digits early in the fourth quarter but the Eagles were able to pull back within six with just under three minutes to play.  Winthrop, however, didn't score the remainder of the game, falling 58-49.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kem Nwabudu recorded her fourth double-double of the season, leading the Eagles with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Courtney Hagaman added nine points and Maleeah Langstaff pulled down eight rebounds.

The Eagles shot 32 percent from the field but struggled from three-point range, hitting only two of 16 attempts.  Winthrop outrebounded the Spartans 43-38.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
The Eagles will return to the Winthrop to close out its home schedule Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest against the Campbell Camels.  Prior to the game, seniors Courtney Hagaman and Kayla Atkins will be recognized.
