ATHENS, GA— Winthrop split on the second day of the 12
th Annual Red & Black Showcase with a 13-9 win over Buffalo and an 11-0 loss to 6
th-ranked Georgia.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Buffalo
- Winthrop threatened to score in the first as it loaded the bases but Logan Webb fouled out to end the threat
- Buffalo struck first in the second as Hannah Bardeen ripped a two-run homerun with two outs
- Eagles responded with a seven-run 3rd as they scored the seven runs on seven hits
- Tori Walker got things going with a single to left followed by a single from Morgan Lowers
- Two batters later Keleigh Romine singled up the middle to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 and Brooke Ellison tied the game with an RBI single through the hole at short
- Buffalo made a pitching change at that point but the Eagles offense continued to pour it on
- With two outs, Kiley Majette reached on an error that brought home Ellison and Reema Patel for a 4-2 lead
- Winthrop batted around as Walker came through with her second single to left in the inning as this one scored two for a 6-2 lead and then Lowers made it 7-2 with an RBI single to left
- Buffalo matched the Eagles in the bottom of the third with seven runs of its own, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Bardeen for her second homer of the game
- Eagles allowed the seven runs on just three hits as the pitching issued five walks in the inning
- Lowers made it a one-run game in the 5th with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring pinch-runner Kamryn Culp
- A throwing error got things started for the Eagles in the top of the 7th and they took advantage
- After Taylor Charlton reached on the error to start things off, Walker doubled to right center and Lowers tied the game at 9-9 with a single to left
- Winthrop took the lead when Walker scored on a failed pick-off attempt as Lowers stole second to get into scoring position
- Ashley Westbrooks gave the Eagles a two-run cushion with an RBI double to left
- Ellison followed with an RBI double and then Webb made it 13-9 with an RBI single
- Bella Roy earned her second win of the season in relief as she tossed 4.2 innings allowing just two hits with four walks and six strikeouts
- Winthrop pitching did issue eight walks in the game but also had 10 strikeouts
- Walker finished with a career-high five hits in the game (5-for-5) while Lowers also set a career-high with four hits
- In addition to Walker and Lowers, Ellison and Gilreath also had multiple hits
vs. Georgia
- Bulldogs took advantage of five walks in the first to jump out to a 5-0 lead
- Ciara Bryan's two-run single and Savana Sikes ground out RBI made it 4-0
- Bryan then scored on a wild pitch, the second Bulldog to score on a wild pitch in the inning
- Alyssa DiCarlo made it 7-0 in the second with a two-run homerun as she homered against the Eagles for a second straight game
- Georgia's Kylie Bass and Alley Cutting combined to hold the Winthrop offense in check
EXTRA BASES
- Blake Wallert extended her hitting streak to seven games in the win over Buffalo
- Romine extended her streak of reaching base to eight games against Buffalo
- The 13 runs against the Buffalo were the most scored by the Eagles since putting up 13 against Campbell on May 12, 2017
- Last season the Eagles scored 10 or more runs one time while they've already done so in twice in eight games this season
- The 18 hits against Buffalo were the most in a game by Winthrop since it had 18 against Coppin State on Feb. 7, 2015
