SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Winthrop men's tennis opened Big South Conference play with a 7-0 sweep of new league member Hampton Sunday afternoon at Old Dominion University's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center indoor facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-Gabriel Dias and Diego Quiroz paired at the No. 1 doubles position for the first time this season posting a 6-1 victory. Connor Williamson and Lluis Miralles paired at No. 2, earning a 6-4 win and the doubles point for Winthrop.

-Connor Williamson kept his momentum going in singles play posting his fourth-consecutive victory, a 6-4, 6-2 win over Luka Eble for a 2-0 lead.

-Upstate got on the board as junior Fernando Bernardes defeated freshman Lluis Miralles. Senior Aditya Gokhale earned a three-set victory to put the Eagles up 3-1, and junior Gabriel Dias clinched the victory at 4-1 with a three-setter at No. 2, coming back from dropping his first set to win his second set in a tiebreaker and take the third 6-2.

-Diego Quiroz and Albert Tinagli wrapped up the match with two more three-set victories, both including hard-fought tiebreaker and 7-5 sets.

NOTABLES
-The Eagles shifted their doubles lineups at the top two positions and saw continued positive results. The Eagles have won the doubles point in each of their wins this season.

-Today's victory marks the team's fourth-straight win and second-consecutive win to open conference play.

-Connor Williamson has posted four-consecutive singles victories, all in straight-sets.
