ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball opened conference play with a win by defeating Hampton 72-66 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 4-6 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles were dominant in the first 10 minutes of play, going on a 10-0 run and holding Hampton to just five points in the first quarter. Winthrop took a 34-23 lead into the locker room at halftime, behind a career-high 12 points from
Maleeah Langstaff. Winthrop outscored Hampton 16-14 in the third quarter and took a 12 point lead into the final 10 minutes of play. Despite the double-digit lead, the Pirates came charging back with a 15-4 run to make it a one possession game with 4:22 to play. The Eagles made seven of its last 10 baskets to keep the lead and secure the win.
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield recorded eight of her 17 points in the remaining four minutes of play. Winthrop finished the game 56 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range, while Hampton finished the game 36 percent from the field and just 14 percent from behind the arc. This is Winthrop's first conference win over Hampton after dropping both matchups last season.
