ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop women's basketball team battled College of Charleston to the wire before falling 84-73 on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles had a strong first half, scoring a season-high 39 points in the first 20 minutes of play. They jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead behind a 3-pointer from
Miquela Santoro and a basket from
Anika Riley. College of Charleston responded with 13 unanswered points. The Cougars took a 24-11 lead into the second quarter.
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield opened the scoring for the Eagles in the second quarter with a layup and two good free throws. A
Miquela Santoro-3- pointer cut the Cougars lead to just five points with under five minutes to play. Freshman
Tori Hall ignited a run for the Eagles, contributing a career-high 12 points off the bench. A 12-0 run gave the Eagles a two-point lead at halftime. The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle. Winthrop was outscored 22-19 and trailed 59-58 with 10 minutes to play. The Cougars came out hot in the fourth quarter. 11 Winthrop turnovers in the fourth and a 13-4 run secured the win for College of Charleston.

FOREVER AN EAGLE
Angela Coello Perez played in her last game as an Eagle against College of Charleston. The senior appeared in 72 career games, recording 294 points, 243 rebounds and 35 assists. Coello Perez will graduate on Dec. 14 with a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training. After graduation, she will return to Spain to play overseas and continue her education.
