Winthrop Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Iona, 61-68

Rock Hill, S.C. - Winthrop women's basketball opened with a 61-68 loss to Iona College on Saturday night.
After a close first quarter, Winthrop went on a 15-2 run, holding Iona scoreless for four minutes and eight seconds in the second. The Eagles took a 33-22 lead into the half, behind nine points from Jah'Che Whitfield. The Eagles were unable to adjust to Iona's second-half changes. Iona was able to capitalize on Winthrop's three turnovers in the third, scoring nine points. Winthrop was held scoreless for the first four minutes and 49 seconds of the fourth quarter. During this time, the Gaels regained the lead for the first time since the second quarter and Winthrop was unable to recover.

"We played against a very good ball club tonight in our home opener and we're looking to get stronger. We let it slip out of our hands and that's something that we have to learn from. We'll be stronger for it in the long run."

  • Jah'Che Whitfield finished the game with 21 points and five assists, both a new career-high. 
Notables
  • Anika Riley finished with a team-high 12 rebounds. She now has 426 career rebounds, just 74 shy of the 500 milestone.
  • Freshmen Imani Elliot and Tori Hall both made their collegiate debut in the season opener, playing a combined three minutes, each committing a turnover.
  • Jah'Che Whitfield (21) and Sydney Buckley (11) finished with double-digit points.
  • The Eagles and Gaels finished with 40 rebounds each. 
  • Winthrop finished with a 15-8 advantage of second-chance points.
