Eagles Complete Comeback For First Win Of The Season

DURHAM, N.C. — The Winthrop women's basketball team defeated North Carolina Central, 56-46, for its first win of the season. The Eagles started off slow allowing NCCU to go on a 6-0 run to start the game and scoring just six first-quarter points. Winthrop was down 7-16 after the first quarter, with six of NCCU's 16 points coming off turnovers. Winthrop overcame an 11-point deficit in the second quarter, outscoring North Carolina Central 18-11 to cut their lead to two points at the half. With 7:05 remaining in the third quarter, Destinee Jamison-Whitfield gave Winthrop a 27-25 lead, its first of the game. The Eagles were dominant in the fourth quarter. Winthrop went on a 7-2 run late in the fourth to pull ahead, 50-46. They then went on to score six unanswered points to secure the win.

  • Anika Riley recorded a team-high 13 rebounds in Winthrop's win over NCCU. She now has 439 career rebounds, just 61 shy of the 500 milestone.
  • Sydney Hunter made her collegiate debut on Tuesday night, contributing five rebounds in 12 minutes, turning the ball over twice.
