Buies Creek, N.C. – The
Eagles escaped a five-set thriller at the Gore Center, on Campbell's campus (26-24, 25-15, 26-28, 21-25, 15-13). The Eagles continue to roll through the conference, moving to 11-0, and 19-4. They have officially beaten every team with just three matches to go in the regular season.
How It Happened
The Campbell Camels came out swinging in set one, pushing a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead. The Eagles showcased what makes them the number one team in the conference with a 7-0 run to reclaim a 13-6 lead.
Jace Kleffner hammered home three kills in the run. The Eagles kept a comfortable lead, reaching set point 24-20, when the Camels made it interesting. The home team scored four straight points to tie the set 24-24, and then again at 25-25. Consecutive kills from
Morgan Bossler and
Camila Gomez put the Eagles up 1-0.
The Eagles remedied some of their attacking errors in the first set, finishing the second set with a clip of .267. The Eagles managed three blocks and two aces in a runaway second set.
The third set looked eerily similar to the first set but the Camels would come out on top in this one. After reaching set point and looking to complete the sweep, Campbell tied the set 24-24. The third set saw three more ties and three more lead changes before a kill from Sarah Colla brought the match 2-1.
Campbell took an Early lead in the fourth set and held on to it through the end. An ace from
Leah Metzger and a block from Siebold helped spark a 5-0 Winthrop run. The run came too late and the Camels forced the deciding fifth set.
The Eagles found themselves down 7-8 in the fifth set, but a 3-0 run put them on top of the Camels, 10-8.
Siani Yamaguchi had two aces and Leah Metzer added in another to help keep the lead. Once again, the Camels forged a late comeback but a kill from
Makayla Doyle sealed the win for the Eagles.
