Volleyball Escapes Five-Set Thriller Against USC Upstate

Rock Hill, S.C – Eagles move to 12-0 in conference after a narrow victory of USC Upstate (25-16, 23-25, 30-32, 25-8, 15-13). This was just the second time the Eagles played a five-set match in conference play and both went down to the wire.

How It Happened
The match opened with an ace serve from Siani Yamaguchi and was followed by a big kill from Emily Wunder. The Eagles continued to build a lead behind a 7-0 run. Morgan Bossler answered an Upstate timeout with a huge block as the Eagles continued to use their momentum to extend the lead, 20-8.

In the second set, struggled to maintain their errors and found themselves down, 20-17. They chipped away Upstate's lead and came within one, 24-23. Upstate scored the next point to take the set and tie the match.

The third set was notched, 6-6, but a huge block by Emily Wunder and key kills from Makayla Doyle provided the spark the Eagles needed. Eagles held a 19-13 lead but USC Upstate did not give up the fight. The Eagles saw six set point opportunities but couldn't get the job done and allowed Upstate to take a 2-1 match lead.

The Eagles were forced to play from behind for the first time in conference play and they responded like the number one team in the conference. Upstate had no answer for the Eagles in the fourth set, not even reaching double-digit points. Morgan Bossler came up big with four of the last four kills.

Down 6-2 in the fifth, the Eagles put together a comeback, including a a kill from Yamaguchi that tied the set 10-10. After Upstate recovered a Makayla Doyle block, Doyle ended the rally with a kill, bringing the set to match point Eagles. Jace Kleffner finishes the job with a kill straight to the middle of the court.
