Marc Carreras (Barcelona, Spain)
Carreras has played for the Eagles for three seasons and makes his 33
rd career start against PC. He recently netted two goals including the golden goal in a 2-1 win over Radford. Carreras has a career-high in goals (4) and points (8) this season. Scored his first collegiate goal on Aug. 25, 2018 vs. Georgia Southwestern.
Andres Carvajal (Caracas, Venezuela)
Transferred from St. Andrews and has played in 28 games with 16 starts. Scored his first and only collegiate goal on Sept. 25, 2018 against USC Upstate. Had a goal and an assist in that contest against USC Upstate. Played a career-high 110 minutes on Oct. 22, 2019 at Georgia Southern in a 1-1 tie.
Leif Estevez (Frickingen, Germany)
Estevez is 1-of-3 seniors to play all four years for the Eagles. He has played in 60 games in his career with 51 starts and has tallied seven goals and eight assists (22 points). Scored his first collegiate goal as a freshman on Sept. 13 in a 4-0 win over USC Upstate. As a junior he enjoyed his best season offensively with five goals and four assists. Was named to the 2018 Big South All-Academic Team.
Chandler Gaunce (Winchester, KY)
Transferred to Winthrop from Transylvannia University where he had eight wins in two seasons with a goals against average under 1.0. Gaunce has battled some injuries this year and split time in 2018 as he's played in nine games. In his first start he made four saves in a 1-0 loss at High Point on Sept. 29, 2018. He recorded his first win and shutout on Oct. 6 at UNC Asheville. Started the opener in 2019 before getting hurt in the second game of the season and earned his second shutout as an Eagle at VMI.
Jogvan Jacobsen (Albertslund, Denmark)
Is 1-of-3 seniors to play all four years for the Eagles. Has played in 53 games in his career with 41 starts while tallying four goals (two game-winners) and six assists. On Oct. 15 of this season, Jogvan scored two goals to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 win at Longwood. Scored his first collegiate goal on Oct. 26, 2016 in a 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb.
Miles Rapp (Dinwiddie, VA)
Is 1-of-3 seniors to play all four years for the Eagles. Rapp has been a versatile player during his career playing in the midfield and along the back four. Rapp has played in 55 games with 50 career starts and has three assists (1 in each of the last three seasons). Played a career-high 1,288 minutes in 2018, which were the most minutes on the team by more than 100. Picked up first collegiate assist on Sept. 1, 2017 in a 1-1 draw at Mercer.
Jordan Walshaw (Sheffield, England)
Walshaw transferred to Winthrop prior to his junior season after UNC Pembroke eliminated its program. Walshaw has been a threat to opposing defenses his entire collegiate career as he's totaled 20 goals and 19 assists (59 points) in his career between Winthrop and UNCP. This year Walshaw leads the team and the Big South with seven assists. His seven assists are tied for 15
th nationally as of Oct. 24, 2019 and tied for 22
nd in assists per game. Scored his first goal as an Eagle on Aug. 25, 2018 against Georgia Southwestern. At Pembroke he earned the Peach Belt Conference Golden Ball as a sophomore and was a two-time Peach Belt All-Conference selection.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS PRESBYERIAN COLLEGE
Winthrop and Presbyterian College meet for the 21
st time as Winthrop leads the all-time series 17-3. After winning 17 straight meetings, the Blue Hose have won the last three and have outscored the Eagles 8-1 in those three games. Eagles are 9-1 all-time at home against PC.
LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET
These two teams last met Oct. 3, 2018 in Clinton as PC scored three goals in the first half to earn a 3-0 victory. Adrian Edo Martin scored in the 18
th minute for the first goal as he ripped a shot into the net from just outside the penalty area. Jordan Barbara made it 2-0 less than two minutes later as he curled a free kick into the upper 90 from about 30 yards away. Sergio Pinto added the third goal in the 29
th minute off a throw-in. PC had a 10-7 advantage in shots and 7-2 on corners.
SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE
Coming off a 3-1 win over USC Upstate at home and have now won three of the last four games after opening the season 2-8. The Blue Hose are 1-6 on the road but recently fell 2-1 in overtime at High Point and earned a road win at Longwood in overtime. The offense is scoring 1.21 goals per game which ranks 6
th in the Big South but has 14 goals in the last seven games (2.0 per game). Sergio Pinto leads the team with eight points (4 goals) while Luca Ziegler is second with seven points (2g, 3a). Valentin Kliebe has been the mainstay in goal having played in 13 games with a 1.76 goals against average and 38 saves. The team's first win of the season came Sept. 24 against Middle Georgia State, 2-1 and that kick started a run that has five wins in seven games that includes wins over Furman, Longwood, Radford, and USC Upstate.
A GLANCE AT WINTHROP
Eagles are unbeaten in their last three games at 2-0-1 and coming off a 1-1 draw at Georgia Southern. The Eagles had a short turnaround from its game on Sunday against Radford and then at Georgia Southern Tuesday. Head coach
Daniel Ridenhour was able to play a lot of players nearly emptying his entire bench for the non-conference matchup.
Marc Carreras scored the lone goal for the Eagles as he now has three goals in the last two games and is second on the team with eight points (4 goals) while
Jordan Walshaw leads with one goal and seven assists for nine points. The seven assists by Walshaw rank 15
th nationally and leads the Big South. Eagles are currently in a tie for 5
th with UNC Asheville in the league standings as they have their eyes set on one of the six spots for the conference tournament. The Eagles will need at least two wins over the final three games to earn a spot at the tournament. Of its final three games, Gardner-Webb and PC are both ahead of the Eagles in the standings.
10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 2009 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
This season the Eagles celebrate the 10
th anniversary of the 2009 Big South Conference Championship team. The Eagles were coming off a championship in 2008 as it lost some of the greatest players in the history of the program. The Eagles were still loaded with talent and after dropping the opener 3-1 at North Carolina State, they won five in a row. Heading into the Big South Tournament the Eagles were struggling, having lost three straight (outscored 10-1). Winthrop, seeded fourth, defeated Gardner-Webb in penalties to advance to the semifinals and then advanced to the championship after defeating top-seeded Coastal Carolina 4-2 in penalties. The Eagles went on to defeat Liberty 2-1 in the championship game, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. Winthrop went on to lose 3-2 at 20
th-ranked Duke in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup.
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
The Eagles were voted 7
th in the 2019 Big South Conference preseason poll. Winthrop returns nine players that started at least eight games from a team that was 3-5 in the league last year. The Eagles finished in 7
th last season, a point out of tying Longwood and USC Upstate for 6
th. Defending regular-season champion High Point is the preseason favorite while Radford and Campbell tied for 2
nd in the poll.
WHAT'S AHEAD
Winthrop hits the road for its final two regular season games beginning Saturday, Nov. 2 when it travels to Spartanburg, SC to take on USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
