Eagles Head To Georgia Southern Tuesday Night For Final Non-Conference Matchup

ROCK HILL, SC— Coming off back-to-back conference wins the Winthrop men's soccer team steps away from league play for its final non-conference game of the year when it travels to Georgia Southern Tuesday evening.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Winthrop and Georgia Southern meet for the 19th time. The two teams last met Sept. 19, 2017 in Rock Hill with Georgia Southern prevailing 2-1. Winthrop holds a 10-6-2 advantage in the all-time series and is 3-3-1 when playing in Statesboro.  
 
LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET
The last meeting was Sept. 19, 2017 when Georgia Southern earned a 2-1 win. All three goals in the game were scored in the second half as Winthrop struck first in the 78th minute when Evan Stout scored off a pass from Leif Estevez. Less than a minute later Georgia Southern drew level as Javier Carbonell scored on a free kick. Georgia Southern netted the game-winner in the 90th minute, taking advantage of a poor clearance by Winthrop as Carbonell flipped a pass back to the six where Blake Wilson slotted it home.
 
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Georgia Southern is 6-6-1 on the year and coming off a home loss to Central Arkansas in a Sun Belt matchup. The offense is averaging 1.75 goals per game while allowing 1.67 goals per game. Adam Davie leads the team with 18 points (7g, 4a) while Aldair Cortes has 10 points (4g, 2a). In goal the Eagles have split time between Jose Eduardo Bomfim has been the mainstay in goal recently and has a 3-2-1 mark with a 1.29 goals against average and 25 saves.     
 
A GLANCE AT WINTHROP
Eagles have won two straight and for the second straight game had a player with two goals in a match. Marc Carreras scored two goals including a golden goal in the 97th minute to earn a win over Radford. The Eagles scored with 43 seconds left as Carreras buried a penalty and then laced a shot into the upper 90 in overtime for the win. Carreras now has three goals on the year and is third on the team with six points. Jordan Walshaw leads the team with eight points (1g, 6a) and Jogvan Jacobsen is second with seven points (3g, 1a). Walshaw's six assists are tied for first in the Big South and leads the conference in assists per game. Chandler Gaunce started the second half against Radford, earning the win as he made two saves in the second half.
 
10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 2009 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
This season the Eagles celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2009 Big South Conference Championship team. The Eagles were coming off a championship in 2008 as it lost some of the greatest players in the history of the program. The Eagles were still loaded with talent and after dropping the opener 3-1 at North Carolina State, they won five in a row. Heading into the Big South Tournament the Eagles were struggling, having lost three straight (outscored 10-1). Winthrop, seeded fourth, defeated Gardner-Webb in penalties to advance to the semifinals and then advanced to the championship after defeating top-seeded Coastal Carolina 4-2 in penalties. The Eagles went on to defeat Liberty 2-1 in the championship game, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. Winthrop went on to lose 3-2 at 20th-ranked Duke in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup.

BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
The Eagles were voted 7th in the 2019 Big South Conference preseason poll. Winthrop returns nine players that started at least eight games from a team that was 3-5 in the league last year. The Eagles finished in 7th last season, a point out of tying Longwood and USC Upstate for 6th. Defending regular-season champion High Point is the preseason favorite while Radford and Campbell tied for 2nd in the poll.
 
WHAT'S AHEAD
Winthrop gets back to league action as it hosts Presbyterian College in a key matchup as the Eagles try and stay alive for a spot in the conference tournament. Winthrop and PC will kickoff at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's team (1 p.m.) as both teams will recognize their seniors with pregame ceremonies.
