GOLDEN GOAL: Carreras Lifts Eagles Over Radford In OT For 2nd Straight Win

ROCK HILL, SC— Marc Carreras' goal in the 97th minute lifted Winthrop to a 2-1 victory over Radford, Sunday evening in Big South Conference action.

Game Recap
  • The Highlanders grabbed an early lead as Baye Djibril Faye collected a long ball from Octavio Ocompo, dribbled into the box and buried a shot into the lower right corner
  • Radford looked for another goal applying more pressure offensively over the remainder of the half but unable to convert
  • Winthrop's best chance in the first half came in the 29th minute when Carreras let one fly from about 25 yards out straight on from goal but the shot was right at Joseba Incera for the save
  • Highlanders nearly grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute but Chandler Gaunce, who subbed into the game to start the second half, made a save at close range to keep it a one-goal game
  • In the 54th minute Jogvan Jacobsen dribbled toward goal inside the box at an angle to the keeper's left and fired a shot that hit off the head of Incera and over the end line for a corner
  • Leif Estevez tested Incera in the 62nd minute as he fired a shot from just outside the penalty area that was headed to the bottom right corner but Incera dove and tipped the ball wide of the post
  • Winthrop continued to apply pressure offensively looking to equalize
  • The Eagles earned a corner with just over a minute to play and off the corner Andres Carvajal won a header that was on its way into the open goal before a handball kept the ball out of the goal
  • Winthrop was awarded a penalty kick and Carreras converted it with 53 seconds remaining in regulation
  • The Eagles began overtime a man up and took advantage getting the ball forward and creating chances off a few services but couldn't convert
  • In the 97th minute, Carreras collected a ball about 25-30 yards out from goal and then cracked a shot into the top right corner for the golden goal
 
Notables
  • Winthrop had lost three straight to Radford and are now 2-1-5 all-time in overtime against the Highlanders
  • It was the second overtime win this season for the Eagles
  • Carreras is the third Winthrop player to score two goals in a game this season
  • The victory moves the Eagles into tie for 5th place in the standings with UNC Asheville (2-3) and Radford (2-4)
  • Winthrop finished with an 11-10 edge in shots and 6-3 in shots on goal
  • The Eagles earned a season-high nine corners

Winthrop steps away from league play to travel to Statesboro, GA to take on Georgia Southern on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
