Game Recap
  • Georgia Southern had a strong start to the game and capitalized for the early lead
  • Aldair Cortes cracked a half volley from the edge of the box into the top left corner off a cross from Asgeir Kristjansson for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute
  • It was nearly a 2-0 lead as Azaad Liadi had a free look inside the box at an angle but Chandler Gaunce was able to get a piece of the shot forcing it wide of the post
  • The middle of the first half was fairly quiet as both teams tried to work their way into the final third
  • Winthrop finished the half strong and the best chance of the game came in the 40th minute when Jordan Walshaw broke free in the box
  • Walshaw dribbled toward the goalie and tried to lift a shot over the goalie as the ball sailed too high and pinged off the crossbar and was cleared
  • After being relatively quiet in the offensive third in the second half, Walshaw did some work to get the Eagles on the board
  • Walshaw settled a long ball around midfield, dribbled down the sideline in open space and then to the end line where his cross went off the fingertips of Jose Eduardo Bomfim and in front of goal as Marc Carreras making a late run was there to tap the ball into the open net to tie the match in the 68th minute
  • Georgia Southern had the first good scoring opportunity in overtime as Kareem Gharbi received a pass back as he crossed the 18 and his shot curled just wide left of the post in the 91st minute
  • Winthrop was awarded a penalty kick in the 92nd minute as Carreras stepped in and his shot to the lower right corner was saved
  • Carreras followed and his shot was saved out for a corner
  • Off the corner Jonathan Foster had a good look at an angle around the six but his shot was turned away
