CHARLESTON, S.C. - Winthrop produced chance after chance against Campbell in what turned out to be a 1-1 draw last Saturday at Eagle Field. However, on Wednesday afternoon the Eagles' offense was not to be denied as Winthrop topped Charleston Southern 4-1 at the CSU Soccer Field. Winthrop came out with a vengeance scoring three first half goals to put the game comfortably in their favor, winning on the road to improve to 3-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Big South play.
The Eagles took the lead in the 19th minute as the team's hot foot
Gabi Hull scored her third goal in as many games for her fourth of the season, assisted on the play by
Natalie Royaards for the senior's first assist of the season.
Just three minutes later, a foul in the CSU penalty area lined
Megan Loveland up for the penalty kick and she converted the chance to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead just 22 minutes into the match. The goal was Loveland's first of the season, with more to come later on from the junior midfielder.
Just four minutes after Loveland extended the lead,
Allie Thomas netted the Eagles' third of the half in the 26th minute, sending in an unassisted arcing shot from a tough right side angle to give Winthrop a commanding 3-0 lead that they would take to the half.
In the 50th minute, Charleston Southern's Zari Hayes netted the Buccaneers' only goal of the afternoon. However the Eagles put any possible rally hopes to rest in the 58th minute when
Megan Loveland scored her second of the season and second of the match to put Winthrop up 4-1 and put the game on ice. The goal was assisted by
Allie Thomas, her third of the season.
