Volleyball Beats Radford; Remains Unbeaten At Home And In Conference

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop volleyball got their first win over Radford since the 2015 season to remain perfect in Big South play (25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 25-9). The Eagles are now 9-0 at home, 7-0 in the Big South, and have won 12 of their last 13 matches. Winthrop found some redemption today after being swept three times by the Highlanders in the 2018 season.

How It Happened
Emily Wunder started her first trip through the front row perfect, with four kills off four attempts and finished the set with 7 kills, no errors. The Eagles had a seven-point lead but untimely errors allowed the Highlander's back in the set. A kill from Morgan Bossler and a Radford attacking error put the Eagles up 1-0 on the match.

Winthrop was off to another hot start in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead. The second set saw just one tie and zero lead changes as the Eagles controlled the entire set. The Eagles used their offensive efficiency to extend their lead late in the match. The team finished with a .364 efficiency in the set.

Radford, looking to avoid the sweep, found some momentum in the third set, taking an 8-4 lead, and forced Winthrop to call their first timeout of the match. The Highlanders had five more kills than Winthrop and out blocked them 4-1 in the third set.

The Eagles used the set break to regroup and came out with authority in the fourth set. They took a 5-0 lead to start the set and the Highlanders would only score nine total points in the final set. Makayla Doyle came out hot, picking up four of her seven kills in the fourth set.

Inside the Box Score
Emily Wunder finished with a career high, 16 kills with a .400 hitting efficiency and three blocks to lead the Eagles. Nikkia Benitez finished with her second double-double in a row with 14 kills and 10 digs. Siani Yamaguhi finished with 46 assists while setting her team to a .256 match efficiency.
