Jacobsen's Brace Leads Eagles To First Big South Win

FARMVILLE, VA— Jogvan Jacobsen netted two goals to lead Winthrop to its first Big South win as it earned a 2-1 road win at Longwood, Tuesday evening

Game Recap
  • In the 11th minute, the Eagles had the first quality scoring chance as Jayden Mace's service to the back post found the head of Miles Rapp but the shot just missed left of the post
  • In the 16th minute Longwood had its first good chance as a ball was delivered into the box but Mikel Abando couldn't get over the ball enough and his header sailed over the bar
  • Eagles struck first in the 21st minute as they won the ball near midfield, Walshaw slipped a pass to Jogvan Jacobsen and he buried the shot into the left corner as he crossed the 18 yard box
  • The Lancers had a good chance to tie the match in the 25th minute as Markus Gronli took a drop pass at the top of the 18 and fired a shot that made its way through traffic and was turned away by Sam Jones
  • The rebound didn't get far as Abando tried to place a shot into the top right corner just outside the six as it pinged off the post and the play ended as the Lancers were offside
  • Abando had another chance in the 38th minute as he collected a ball around the six at an angle but his shot was redirected over the line for a corner
  • The Lancers had a great chance in the 58th minute to equalize but Jones made a big save off a header from Filip Hinge in front of goal
  • Jacobsen struck again in the 69th minute as he headed home a Ben Goodman cross for a 2-0 lead
  • Longwood cut the Eagles lead in half at 2-1 in the 83rd minute as Abando finally broke through
  • Ander Etxaniz dribbled toward the middle of the field and about 30 yards out straight on from goal he slipped a pass in front to Abando and he redirected the pass into the left corner
  • Longwood had a 21-11 advantage in shots but each team recorded four shots on goal 
Notables
  • The Eagles have scored first in five of the six games they've scored goals in this season
  • Goodman assisted on the second goal as he now has three assists on the season, which is second most on the team
  • Jacobsen is the first Eagle to score multiple goals in a conference game since the last meeting with Longwood when Leif Estevez and Alfie Rogers each scored two in a 4-1 win Oct. 27, 2018
  • The win was the sixth straight over Longwood for the Eagles and the third straight win in Farmville
  • Five of the six games during the win streak have been decided by a single goal 
Looking Ahead
Winthrop remains at home as it will host Radford in a Big South matchup on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m.
