NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Winthrop women's tennis (2-1) took down Memphis (0-2) 4-3 in the consolation final at the ITA Kickoff Weekend on the campus of Vanderbilt University Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-Winthrop took the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
 
-The Eagles would jump out to a 3-0 lead with quick straight-set victories at the Nos. 4 and 1 positions by Rafaela Santos and No. 66-ranked Lauren Proctor.
 
-Memphis clawed back in the match with tough wins at courts two, three and five with Megan Kauffman and Tayla Van Eck taking their matches to three sets.
 
-The match decision would come down to the No. 6 position, senior Ellie Burns vs. Katherine Cao of Memphis. Burns took the first set 6-2, with Cao snagging the second 7-5 to force a tension-filled third set. Burns powered out to a two-break lead at 5-2, but Cao held on to pull within 5-4. Burns pulled out the 6-4 win on another break, won on ad point.

NOTABLES
-All-Americans Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor (No. 22) improved to 3-0 on the year with a 6-1 victory at court one.
 
-The clinching victory was the first of the season for Burns, and first three-set match of her season.
 
-Newcomer Santos is undefeated so far on the season at 2-0. Her match against Oklahoma's Jasmine Asghar went unfinished with Santos leading in the third set.

UP NEXT
The Eagles' imposing 2019 campaign continues next Sat., Feb. 2 as the squad travels to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech, a familiar foe from last spring's NCAA Tournament. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
