ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop men's tennis (1-1) won its home opener 6-1 over Queens University of Charlotte Friday afternoon at Rock Hill Tennis Center. The match counted as an exhibition for the visiting Royals. The two squads played out all match decisions, including three exhibition matches, making for good match experience for both teams in the early going of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-The Eagles opened strong, sweeping all three doubles courts for the first point of the day.  
 
-Senior Diego Quiroz led off the momentum for Winthrop, with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 performance at the No. 1 position. Freshman Lluis Miralles would put the Eagles up 3-0 with a straight-set win at No. 4.
 
-Freshman Alberto Tinagli decided the win for the Eagles with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position.
 
-Senior Aditya Gokhale earned a hard-fought tiebreaker win in his first set, then led the entire second set to go on to a 6-3 win.
 
-The Eagles were pushed to three sets on the final two courts. After dropping his first set, junior Connor Williamson battled back for a 7-5 win in set two, but fell short as the third set went to a tiebreaker, giving the Royals' their lone point of the day. Junior Gabriel Dias also fell victim to a tiebreaker, falling in his first set, but bounced back to take the final two and a win.

NOTABLES
-Freshmen Lluis Miralles and Alberto Tinagli earned their first career victories at Winthrop, both earning straight-set wins.
 
-The Eagles also won each of the three exhibition matches, as Rhys Jones and Leandros Pappayiannis earned straight-set singles victories and Pappayiannis paired with Tinagli for a 6-1 doubles win.

The Eagles head to nearby Davidson on Sun., Jan. 27 to take on the Wildcats at 1 p.m. at Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center. Admission is free.
