CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winthrop women's tennis (1-0) opened the 2019 spring season with a 4-3 victory over William & Mary (1-1) at Lifetime Fitness Club in Charlotte Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-The Eagles opened the action by taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and two, including the debut of newcomer Rafaela Santos partnering with Alisa Soloveva. The duo earned a 6-2 victory in their first spring contest.
 
-Soloveva put the Eagles up 2-0 with a straight-set win to start off singles play.
 
-The Tribe pulled ahead 3-2 as they notched up three singles victories at courts three, five and six. Courts five and six were both close battles with identical 7-5, 6-4 scores.
 
-Senior captain No. 66 Lauren Proctor would pull Winthrop even at 3-3 with a three-set victory at the No. 1 position, overcoming a tiebreaker loss in the first set to take the final two sets with relative ease, 6-2, 6-2.
 
-In her spring debut, freshman Rafaela Santos was the clinching point, finishing off a three-set victory with a 6-1 third set to decide the match for Winthrop.

NOTABLES
-After a 24-match undefeated streak in 2018, All-Americans Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor opened the season with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 over the Tribe's Lauren Goodman and Charlotte Madson.

UP NEXT
The Eagles head to Nashville, Tenn. for the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Jan. 25-26. Winthrop will face Oklahoma on Jan. 25 then either Vanderbilt or Memphis on Jan. 26 depending on outcomes.
