CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winthrop men's tennis (0-1) fell to nonconference foe Charlotte (2-0) in its season opener Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
-The 49ers took the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 2.
-Charlotte confirmed the victory with quick wins on the bottom half of the lineup at positions 5, 6 and 4.
-The Eagles got on the board as junior Connor Williamson earned a 7-4, 6-4 win at No. 3.
-Gabriel Dias and Diego Quiroz would both go to three sets on the top two courts, but Charlotte would come away with wins on both.

NOTABLES
-In his first match at the No. 2 position after primarily playing court 5 in 2018, junior Gabriel Dias took Charlotte junior Ignasi De Rueda to three sets. After dropping the first set 6-0, Dias showed his trademark resilience and bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second to force a deciding third set, which de Rueda would take 6-3.

UP NEXT
The Eagles host their home opener next Sat., Jan. 19 with a doubleheader of matches against Queens University at Rock Hill Tennis Center. Match times are set for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
