SERIES HISTORY VERSUS GEORGIA STATE
The Eagles and Panthers meet for the fourth time with the all-time series favoring Georgia State 2-1. This will be the second time they've faced each other in Rock Hill. The first time was Sept. 22, 1999 as the Eagles prevailed 2-0.
THE LAST TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MET
These two teams squared off in 2017 in a contest in Atlanta, GA that saw the Panthers pull out a 3-2 win in double overtime on a penalty kick. Winthrop found the back of the net in the 15
th minute on a goal by
Nil Vinyals for a 1-0 lead but Georgia State tied the match nearly five minutes later. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 78
th minute thanks to
Max Hasenstab. A goal in the 86
th minute tied the match as Kyle Clinton scored on a header off a throw. In the 107
th minute the Panthers earned a penalty and Rashid Alarape converted for the golden goal.
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop has been shutout in back-to-back matches, but it hasn't been from a lack of quality opportunities. The Eagles have 17 shots (five shots on goal) over the last two games.
Jack Pondy has recorded five saves each of the last two contests as he's faced 24 shots (13 on goal).
Jordan Walshaw still leads the team in scoring with five points (1 goal, 3 assists).
Alfie Rogers is likely to return to the line up after missing the Wofford match, which could give the offense a little lift. Rogers along with four other players each have one goal.
TAKING ON THE PEACH STATE
The Eagles have four programs on their schedule from the state of Georgia this season. In addition to the season opener against Georgia Southwestern the Eagles take on Mercer and Georgia State while traveling to Georgia Southern. The same three teams were on Winthrop's schedule in 2017 as the Eagles fell 3-2 in overtime at Georgia State and Georgia Southern 2-1 while earning a draw at Mercer (1-1).
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was picked sixth in the Big South preseason poll as High Point was voted as the favorite with 7-of-9 first-place votes. High Point was followed by Radford, Campbell, Presbyterian College and Gardner-Webb. Tied for 7
th was UNC Asheville and Longwood while USC Upstate was voted 9
th. The top six teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Big South Conference Tournament.
WHAT'S AHEAD
Once again the Eagles will have the week off as they will be back in action on Eagle Field against USC Upstate on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. It will be the Big South Conference opener for both teams.
