BUIES CREEK, NC – A late goal for the Campbell Camels dealt the Winthrop women's soccer team its first conference loss Saturday afternoon as the Eagles fell 2-1.
Winthrop falls to 7-3-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Big South while Campbell improves to 3-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop had a slow start to the match offensively, amassing only one shot over the first 32 minutes. In the last 10 minutes of the period, the offensive pressure picked up for the Eagles and it paid off from a corner kick.
Arrayana Daniels had a shot cleared off the line in the 39
th minute and off another corner, only a minute later, she buried a header on a service from
Keeley Leising. Winthrop took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
Campbell found the equalizer in the 57
th minute After a scramble in the box, the Camels had an initial shot blocked before Jessica Donald got her head to the ball and put it in the back of the net. Winthrop managed only one more shot in the half that was saved. The game-winner came off the foot of Alexa Genas in the 81
st minute as she hit a first-time attempt from 15 yards out that beat
Kelly Horan to the near post.

Campbell held a significant 16-6 advantage on shots with eight of the Camels attempts going on goal while the Eagles put three shots on frame. Winthrop had an 8-5 edge on corner kicks. Daniels led the Eagles with two shots while five other Eagles had one shot each.
