Box Score ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss Wednesday evening, falling 4-2 on the road to the USC Upstate Spartans.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop (7-4-1, 4-2) struck first in the 19
th minute on a penalty kick.
Allie Thomas drove the ball to the end line and cut to her left, inside the penalty area, and was tripped as she drove to goal. Thomas stepped up to take the kick and nailed a rising ball to the left of the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
USC Upstate (7-5, 3-2) evened the match in the 29
th minute from the foot of Abbie Ellis. After a giveaway from the Eagles in the midfield, Ellis drove 10 yards and struck and hard shot to the right of the Winthrop goalie into the top left corner. The Eagles regained a 2-1 edge in the 33
rd minute as
Brianna Palmer hit a cross into the box that got over the keeper's hands and into the side netting.
The second half went scoreless through the first 35 minutes before the Spartans broke through for the equalizer in the 81
st minute. Ellis got her second as she beat her defender to the near post for a cross from Isabella Burns. Upstate took the lead 3 minutes later as Montanna Hill hit a cross towards the back post that went through the hands of
Kelly Horan and into the net for a 3-2 lead. As Winthrop pushed for an equalizer, the Spartans put home an insurance goal in the 89
th minute.

USC Upstate outshot the Eagles 14-10 and put eight shots on target while the Eagles managed only three shots on frame. Thomas and
Arryana Daniels each tallied two shots while Horan finished with four saves.
