Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 To League-Leading High Point

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop men's soccer suffered a 1-0 home loss to league-leading High Point, Saturday evening at Eagle Field.

Game Recap
  • The first half wasn't filled with a lot of scoring opportunities by either team but High Point opened the scoring just before the half as Ilias Kosmidis headed home a corner kick from Ryan Inman
  • The only scoring chance of the half for the Eagles came in the 22nd minute when Marc Carreras hit a low shot off a free kick to the near post at the lower right corner but Keegan Meyer dropped down and smothered the shot for the save
  • The Panthers had a good chance in the 20th minute as Kosmidis had a decent look from an angle inside the box as Chandler Gaunce made the save to keep the game scoreless
  • Winthrop applied much more pressure offensively in the second half
  • All seven of Winthrop's corners came in the second half
  • Leif Estevez tested Keegan Meyer in the 51st minute as he cut back toward the middle of the field near the top of the box and laced a shot on frame but Meyer was able to take a couple of steps to his right and hold on to the ball for the save
  • In the 72nd minute Andres Carvajal headed a corner kick from Estevez as his header was on frame but hit a High Point defender on the way and deflected out for another corner
  • On the ensuing corner Jordan Walshaw delivered a ball far post as Charlie Ramirez ran on and headed the ball wide of the right post

  • It was a physical conference matchup that saw 37 fouls in the contest
  • Seven of the last eight meetings between Winthrop and High Point have been decided by a goal or a tie (2 ties)
  • Chandler Gaunce made his first start in goal for the Eagles as he finished with four saves

Winthrop will hit the road for the first time during the regular season when it travels to Clinton, SC on Wednesday, Oct. 3 to take on Presbyterian College at 7 p.m.
