Thomas' Two Goals Propel Eagles to 2-0 Victory Over Presbyterian In Conference Opener Friday

CLINTON, SCAllie Thomas scored two goals Friday to propel the Winthrop women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory on the road of the Presbyterian Blue Hose in the team's conference opener.

The Eagles improve to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Big South with the victory.  Presbyterian falls to 5-2 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop was on the front foot offensively, having multiple opportunities in the opening 20 minutes.  The Eagles broke through in the 21st minute as Thomas found the back of the net off a feed from Katie Colwick.

Neither side was able to sustain any offensive pressure in the second half.  Presbyterian recorded its only shot on goal of the game in the 61st minute that Kelly Horan made the save on.  Thomas added the Eagles' insurance goal in the 84th minute on an assist from Natalie Royaards.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Eagles and Blue Hose each finished with nine total shots as Winthrop put six of them on target while the Blue Hose managed only one on goal.  Royaards led the Eagles with three shots while Thomas and Gabi Hull each recorded two.

Winthrop will be free from game play this week before returning to the field next Saturday, September 22 when the Eagles host conference newcomer Hampton.
